6 tips from teachers using video for CPD

What ways are they using video to further success and growth in themselves and their students?

To shed some light, we recently held two of our IRIS Community Conferences so teachers from different schools could share their best practice and teacher tips with others.

A number of teachers who feel that their school has benefited significantly from the system eagerly took this opportunity to share their stories with others, whilst our open round table discussions sought to dig deeper into the most successful ways that IRIS Connect can be used.

Lots of helpful ideas for using IRIS Connect emerged across both days.

Here are some of our favourite teacher tips:

1. Staff Set and Share Goals

Joanne from Broadford Primary School suggested letting teachers choose goals for themselves to show pupils that they’re not the only ones learning. Displaying these goals in a central area allows them to share these with colleagues and contribute to each other’s goals if they choose to.

2. Change Room Layout for Pupil Choice

Joanne also spoke about how her school uses IRIS Connect to gauge whether there is a pattern in the classroom activities that pupils choose to do. Through video, Joanne and her colleagues have identified trends in how their students have tended to opt for activities that are closest to the door or nearest to where an adult is sitting.

3. Encourage ‘Playtime’

IRIS Connect’s Learning Community Co-Ordinator, Rachel Goddard, suggested that letting teachers have time to experiment and play with IRIS Connect helps them feel more confident and ensures that they are happy using all the tools available to them on the IRIS Connect platform. Teachers are often relieved to be reminded that they are the owners of the videos they record; if they have a bad day, they shouldn't be afraid to delete.

4. Gain Deeper Insight into Learning Behaviours

Teacher tip 4 highlights the use of IRIS Connect to help identify strategies to put into place to support students that might be struggling. Some schools have shared videos with students so that they can reflect upon their learning during lessons.

5. Incorporate into Existing School Structure

Nick from Seven Kings High School explained why he didn't want to use IRIS Connect as an external ‘bolt-on’. Instead they found ways to make the system work within the already established school. One way Seven Kings did this was by establishing ‘in-house’ IRIS Connect coaches. Their coaches haven’t come in with experience of the system from elsewhere, but have learnt how to use it from when they were NQTs at the school themselves.

6. Create Triads

Nick also stressed how he values the importance of establishing teaching triads. This allows teachers to identify areas that they are most interested in, or feel they could improve, then work with colleagues to offer each other feedback and share ideas.

What is your school’s favourite way to use IRIS Connect?

Share your own teacher tips in the comments below or share a great success story. We love to hear all of the ways teachers are using the system to impact their teaching, students and schools!
